RCRW Thrilled to Launch Project to Restore Caribou Population in Revelstoke Area

On Monday, March 24, a team of specialists captured 12 female mountain caribou from the Columbia North herd and transferred them to our specially-built maternity pen north of Revelstoke. Their calves will be born safely away from the caribous’ many predators. The caribou will be fed and monitored, and stay in the pen until early July. This gives the young a chance to grow and gain strength before they’re released back into the wild.

Current calf survival rates in the wild can’t sustain the species in our region, so the maternity penning program is designed to increase the survival rate over the next five years to restore the population.

We are so thankful to the many collaborators involved in the project, from government to industry to First Nations, recreational users to resource extraction. All have come together to help this fragile species, and we are happy to launch the project.
